This is my favorite little QuickBooks tip! Why? Because it is easy, it is very useful to every QuickBooks user, and because a lot of experienced users don’t know it. QuickBooks has a little calculator built into all the transaction screens. It’s right where you need it – in any of the amount fields. Just start typing the amounts you need to add or subtract or multiply or divide.
For example, if you want to enter whatever $2,092 minus $1,796 is, just tab to that field and type the formula like you would with a calculator. In this case, you would type this in the Amount field:
type 2092,
then type the minus sign which is also the dash sign,
then type 1796,
then the Enter button
The Enter key acts like the Equals button on a calculator. In this example, the difference of $296 is entered in the Amount field.
This works in any field in a QB form that is expecting a number to be entered. It will work for Amount fields, but also for Quantities, Rates, and the like. I haven’t found a number field it doesn’t work in.
If this tip is news to you, I hope you find it helpful!
